Director, Risk Management

Reports to: Senior Vice President, Finance

Manage global risk management function by incorporating best practices and up-to-date knowledge of the insurance marketplace to determine the most cost efficient approach of addressing the Company’s exposure in areas including workers’ comp, general liability, property, D&O. Function also plays a lead role in developing programs to minimize losses and to regularly inform the organization of trends and performance against benchmarks.

  1. Manage insurance programs, incorporating regular, ongoing reassessments of the company’s exposure profile, changes in the business, and appetite for risk along with developments in the insurance markets.
  2. Work with loss prevention groups and store operations to develop programs designed to create a safe environment for our associates and guests and minimize the frequency and severity of claims.
  3. Identify, evaluate and implement strategies to optimize the Company’s insurance captive.
  4. Develop and report appropriate metrics tracking frequency and severity of company losses. Compare these metrics against relevant benchmarks. Develop and manage quarterly review process to assess and conclude on adequacy of insurance reserves.
  5. Select, manage and direct the efforts of third parties related to the Risk Management function. These entities include insurance brokers, underwriters, insurance carriers, actuaries, state regulatory agencies, plaintiff’s attorneys and consultants.

BA in Finance; MBA preferred

The ideal candidate has risk management experience on a Director’s level or above and has experience in other areas of finance, particularly budgeting, forecasting accounting and treasury.

FINANCIAL CONSULTANT — Staff Position

Summary of position

The Financial Consultant is primarily responsible for providing consultative and technical assistance to team, other internal departments and Girl Scout councils on standards of accounting, internal controls, financial reporting, Sarbanes-Oxley related reporting, budget design and asset management. She/he develops, interprets and implements highly complex financial accounting concepts and advanced techniques for Girl Scout councils' financial planning and controls. The consultant interprets Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) financial policies and keeps abreast of all accounting, tax and governmental regulations. The incumbent issues council alerts that ensure the continuous flow of information among Girl Scout councils on financial trends, legislation and accounting standards. The incumbent researches, receives input and develops resource materials for use by Girl Scout councils.

The consultant takes the lead and serves as a resource to relevant GSUSA departments on generally accepted accounting principles and rule changes on various regulations. She/he is responsible for the council financial analysis for GSUSA and the annual financial data book. The Financial Consultant designs and delivers council financial training, seminars and workshops in regional areas and at the Edith Macy Conference Center in Briarcliff, New York.

Qualifications

  • 8–10 years' financial accounting experience preferred
  • Minimum 3 years' not-for-profit accounting experience desired
  • Demonstrated knowledge of accounting principles and concepts, as well as experience in providing guidance on their application
  • Demonstrated training skills, with emphasis on delivery and presentation
  • Project management experience
  • Solid skills with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent written/verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Consulting experience a plus
  • Travel up to 30% of the time, including Edith Macy Conference Center
  • Driver's license required
  • Bachelors degree in accounting or related area or equivalent relevant experience; Masters degree in accounting or business administration or CPA preferred
